Mike Bowditch is a rookie game warden in a heavily forested corner of Maine. As a kid he learned some things from his backwoods-oriented father before his parents divorced. Mike knew his dad was an excellent shot, poached game, could track just about anything in the woods, drank too much, and was good with his fists. He did not believe his father was capable of murder. When his dad is accused of killing a cop and a land developer, Mike puts his fledgling career on the line as he sets out to prove his father's innocence.

This is the first in Paul Doiron's projected Mike Bowditch mystery series. It is well written with interesting characters and good descriptions of setting. The pace of the story is smooth even as tensions increase. As Mike deals with bitter childhood memories and a broken relationship, Doiron effectively contracts the past with the values Mike honors as a game warden and which may or may not serve him well as he tries to find and save his father and maybe his own career. Based on this book I will read another by this author.
