Detective Renée Ballard was out surfing one morning and when she returned to her car it had been burglarized. Her service gun and badge were missing. Instead of reporting it she decides to recover them herself and begins a quiet, under-the-radar investigation. Back at the office Renée's cold case team is working to solve murders committed several decades earlier. A new officer arrives to join the team, the daughter of retired detective Harry Bosch, and she soon discovers critical evidence in one of the unsolved cases. As you might guess, Ballard has to juggle her investigations and dodge internal reviews and office politics. One thing leads to another, eventually involving Harry in an FBI take-down and the murder of one of Renée's team members.

Michael Connelly, author of this novel, is good at tracking the ups and downs Ballard faces as she works through clues and irritating personalities. I found the plot lines intriguing and the writing smooth and engaging. It was an enjoyable escape from my current diet of history and nature books.
