What is Homelessness?

Homelessness is a complex issue that affects individuals and communities across the nation. It is defined as a condition where an individual lacks a stable or reliable residence on a daily basis. This means that the person does not have a fixed nighttime residence and may sleep in a shelter, temporary accommodations, or a place not intended for human habitation. This can include living in a car, park, abandoned building, or other unsuitable locations. The causes of homelessness are varied and can include poverty, lack of affordable housing, mental illness, substance abuse, and domestic violence.

Families must meet all requirements below;

  • Must live in the San Juan County area
  • Must have lost of home or about to lose their home due to rent past-due that result from an event (crisis) that happened beyond the control of the family.
  • Must have already tried all other means of getting the money to pay or tried to set up a repayment plan.
  • Clients need to have 30% or less of area median income.
  • Payment up to 4 months is available once in a 12 month period.

Root causes of homelessness vary widely, but include:

  • Availability of affordable housing
  • Unemployment
  • Substance abuse
  • Interpersonal conflict
  • Mental health
  • Minimum Wage

Responses to Address Homelessness

Can address homelessness by:

  • Preventing individuals from becoming homeless
  • Prioritize homeless prevention resources for people who have previously experienced homelessness
  • Assisting those that are currently experiencing homelessness

Preventing homelessness involves identifying individuals who are at risk of becoming homeless and connecting them with resources and support to help them stay housed. On the other hand, helping individuals who are already experiencing homelessness typically involves providing them with safe shelter or housing and connecting them with services to address the underlying causes of their homelessness.
